Arduino + Wave Shield in Costume

A second demo of the Wave Shield, this time installed inside a dragon mascot with trigger switches in the feet and one hand. If it’s not apparent, the sounds are actually coming “live” out of the suit, not dubbed over the video here. The last clip shows some of the costume internals, which I know might bend some folks out of shape, that mascots aren’t supposed to reveal their secrets. Consider yourself warned. It’s intended to be instructional, not a performance. This is not a permanent addition to the costume, just a quick demo, hence the liberal use of gaffer’s tape. A real installation would be much more carefully installed. Some of the audio samples were from users ‘fresco’, ‘Pingel’ and ‘inferno’ of The Freesound Project (freesound.org).

It gets annoying real fast, doesn’t it? :) Well the genie’s out of the bottle now…the parts are relatively affordable and easy to acquire, and simple enough to put together that most people could figure it out. So yes…conventions are about to get a lot more cacophonous!

Thanks! I can’t take credit for the costume though, that was a commissioned piece.

As assembled for this demo, yes, the buttons are WAY too easily-triggered (clapping, for instance, sets everything off). There are plenty of spare I/O pins on the Arduino board though…it would be fairly straightforward to an enable button on the opposite hand so the sounds only work when they’re really needed. Lots of “bloopers” when taping this. :) Just wanted to post something quick so people could get ideas.

Thank you kindly. The costume is Jeremy Milne’s work; I just added the noises.

GENIOUS!! Are you one of the first to think of this?

  6. ScabDragon says:

Not the first, no. Triggur had done something similar several years ago (search for ‘mech wolf’), and there might be pro suits that pre-date that. The tech is just more accessible now.
