Geoffrey Holder – “the New James Earl Jones!” (Documentary Short)
“SIMPLY MARVELOUS” – Geoffrey Holder A rare performance and glimpse into the “life and philosophy” of this multi-talented celebrity. Immediately recognizable as the 7-Up, “Uncola man”, his distinctive bass voice, heavy accent and hearty laugh are legendary. This is a clip from his “nightclub act” that was filmed at Joe’s Pub at the Public Theater, New York City. Geoffrey is 6 foot 6 inches tall and shaved his head long before it was cool. Geoffrey won the 1975 Tony Award for Best Director of a Musical, “The Wiz” (1975), the all-African American retelling of “The Wizard of Oz”. That same year he was also awarded the Tony for best costume design and was nominated again for the original 1978 Broadway musical “Timbuktu!”, which he also directed and choreographed. As a choreographer, he has created dance pieces for many companies, including the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and The Dance Theatre of Harlem. Painter, director, set and costume designer, choreographer, dancer, actor, musician and showman; Geoffrey Holder is both colleague and friend to many, many international celebrities: Alvin Ailey, Woody Allen / Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex (But Were Afraid to Ask), Harold Arlen /House of Flowers, Charles Aznavour, George Balanchine / House of Flowers, Pearl Bailey / House of Flowers, Josephine Baker / Josephine Baker and Her Company, Tony Bennett, Ray Bolger/ Tony Award Presenter, Jacques Brel, Truman Capote / House of Flowers, Diahann Carroll / House …
There simply aren’t any words in our existance that could describe this man accurately. He is the very embodiment of class and style.
my god, it’s Baron Samedi!
Good comparison, but hardly new. In fact if you do your homework, you will find that he is in fact older than James Earl Jones, but just barely.
fair enough. my bad!
They need to use his voice and likeness for the X-Men as Apocalypse.
Geoffrey Holder would be perfect for Unicron in Transformers 3 if he appears.
Simply marvelous.. hahahahaha!
“Try making THIS out of a cola nut….ha ha ha haaaa”
Quality and talent just shines out from this video video. Thank you Richard.
No one could make Baron Samedi look so good and so cool like Geoffrey Holder could
“…it’s not how you fall- it’s how you get up!” now- THATS good advice!
Geoffrey Holder epitomizes charisma. He is a dancer, writer, director, producer, actor, singer, and true universal man.

“…and no cah-FEEN” I grew up seeing Geoffry do the 7-up commercials and loved him and his hearty laugh. Over the years I’ve seen so much more of him and love him even more. Great performer and personality.
@CIAO4now
absolutely agree. he’s an original
6:30 brought tears to my eyes. That kind of love and mentoring needs to be not only rewarded but encouraged! I was sitting on a stoop in NYC one afternoon waiting on a friend, when my eyes landed on this amazing statue of a gentleman walking across Broadway with a cane an hat. When he reached the stairs I sat upon I realized it was him, and I couldn’t speak or move LOL! I wish I had.
Is that really you? :O
Sweeeett!!
You remind me of my grandpa & what he always used to say
aw I miss him.
I spot an accent, are you Guyanaese?
Holder’s voice is totally better than Earl Jones’s, and that’s saying a DAMN great amount. Why is he so obscure?
Is he going to be on Celebrity Apprentice
I would be delighted to see Geoffrey Holder. Like I think if I ran into him on the street I’d want to have my picture taken with him, and he’d be cool with it.
and a volcano went poof in the air
This guy is cool !
Geoffrey Holder is simply Marvelous
Seriously, who disliked this? People that didn’t pay rent?
STEEL VAGINA, WONDERFUL!!!
