My dad made my brother and I into robots by gluing aluminum foil on boxes staked on top of each other and cutting holes for our bodies and arms. Then we used construction paper for all the gadgets.

We were about 7 and 8. That was the best costume and I still remember it 30 years later. Mostly because the three of us spent 2-3 days together putting it together. Lots of laughs.

cut 2 holes in a brown paper bag, viola! bagman!

One good costume idea is a bunny rabit. They can wear bunny ears, which sell for about 3 dollars. Then, all you need is some face paint and white clothes. ALso, glue a few cotton balls together and tape then to the back where a bunny tail goes.

Or, they could be a ho-bo. Just take some old clothes and cut them up. You can use some brown makeup for a grundge look.

Finally, they can be Lord Of the Rings. Just get a bunch of plastic toy rings and have your kids wear them. Then, tie a cape (a towel) around their necks and they aer the "Lord" of the "rings".

    Hope those ideas helped!

Do you have some Thrift shops or consigment stores nearby? They are great for used costumes. A lot of them you find are only used once so they look practically new. The Goodwill or Salvation Armys always have costumes this time of the year. Some years we would just paint our faces up or make our hair crazy and just wear a big old tee shirts decorated up or painted. The ideas are endless. If I knew what kinds of things your kids like and whether they are boys or girls then I could give you more specific ideas.

  8. Aubrey's Mom says:

9 year old… My sister went as a hobo… try old or baggy clothes, rip them you know make them look old and use some "dirt" (make up) and mess up his/her hair and they are good to go! =)

My girls are 4 and 2 years old. They are going as bunny rabbits. They are going to wear their pink one piece pajamas, bunny ears, cotton tail, and some make-up on their faces. I use to go as a witch (a witch hat, some yarn for hair, a piece of fabric for a cape, and a broom), a baby, a hobo, vampire (fabric for cape, teeth, a bat). Go to a search engine and type in homemade halloween costumes. You will find some cute ideas.

Go to a thrift store like goodwill. They must have alot out by now. What I did for my child at 2 was I put her in very colorful unmatched clothing and made up her face like a clown.
For the older kids, you can do the same thing or look through closets to find things. Have one of them find black pants and a black shirt and make or buy cat ears and draw on whiskers. Just be creative!

a witch costume, black trousers, and black top, black bin liner for a cape. a broom handle and stick twigs to it. Make a black hat from cardboard coloured black. Use red lipstick for scary face paints. for boys, swordsman….black trousers, black top. make a shield from cardboard, cover in silver foil. make a sword covered in silver foil (or painted silver) . Pirate costume. old trousers cut off at the knees in a jagged fashion, old t shirt, draw black stripes across it all the way across, make an eye patch out of cardboard, paint black, make a sword, as above, tie a white hankie round head, or tie around neck, maybe use a stuffed toy parrot, or any bird and attach onto shoulder with safety pin. hops this gives you some ideas. good luck, meantime, between parties look out for old cheap stuff in shops. eg. after halloween etc

If it’s a girl, dress her up as you or another women. You can use your own make-up and things like that.

  15. KoKo says:

Go as a scarecrow, just old jeans, and old shirt and stick some leaves out of the sleeves. Hobo is similar, just add a little mud to the cheeks.

  16. greylady says:

My 7 year old is going as blood. Painted all red. My 5 year old is going as an exclamation point. I sewed It to a white sheet. Beats me why they told me what they wanted to go as this but they did.

  17. beckinvegas says:

Go for old or dead or clown
Big Clothes – your old stuff for all three types

old – dust hair with baby powder
dead – dust all over with baby powder add black eyeliner under eyes like REALLY bad bags under eyes
clown – Use your lipstick and colorful eye makeup to make clown faces

    HAVE FUN!

  18. Sherri M says:

Clown costume. Look for discounted make-up. Or on sale make up in the halloween section.

Dress one in all red, another in all white, and say it was a peppermint stick broken into halves, straight down the line. Other youngest kid was the top part broken off hook.

  19. Karla R says:

If you buy a clown make-up kit – like at Wal-Mart – you can make each of their faces up like clowns, and then dress them in all sorts of crazy clothes that you have at home.

With very little effort – they could be Eggs & Bacon. (White T-shirts with a Yellow Felt oval pinned to their tummy. The Bacon could wear a pink or brown shirt and pin strips of brown and white felt on their shirt. Then you can tell them to run around each other, and they can be scrambled eggs, or roll over and they would be over easy eggs – etc.

Get three black trash bags (open them up at the bottom and down one side, and tie under their chins with the handle – and you have three dracula capes – or witch capes – or scallop the ends and then they could be bats. Then just paint their faces to match.

Three boxes wrapped in gift paper with head, arms and legs holes cut out – presents. Put a bow on their heads.

Good luck and have fun. Happy Halloween! I envy you – my kids are grown up and I don’t get to make them costumes any more!

  20. Sam X9 says:

Try any of the super heroes costumes (ie. Spider man, Superman, Batman and Robin, etc.)

wrap them in tin foil and have them go as leftovers!!!! LOL

  22. walter chaos says:

Use some old pillow cases -cut out arm holes and neck- cover head with decorated box (like spaceman or what you like….———- try walmart for some cheap costumes———– perhaps a garage sale might yield some old (washable) scarecrow get-up that might be fun for your kids bueno suerte………wally

  23. RJ #13 says:

Garage Sales and Ebay…good costumes for lower prices than a brand new one (your kid will probably only wear it once)

  24. sarah s says:

I buy halloween costumes from a kids’ resale store. Most costumes only get worn once anyway, so you can find them in really good shape, SUPER CHEAP! I just bought a tigger outfit that originally came from the Disney Store. I paid only $6.50. If you don’t know where any resale stores are in your area, look in the phone book under resale or thrift

  25. koko says:

A Robot would be cool, made out of A box.

  26. Starbucks Fanatic says:

Maybe go with the traditional sheet ghost. Though this is very generic and is not successful in keeping you warm.

  27. wil_t52 says:

  28. Grumpiest Man On Earth says:

Buy him some cheetah underwear and use an old rope. Make him just wear the cheetah briefs and tell him that he is dressed up as Tarzan!

    Cheeta briefs $3.50
    Old Rope $0.00
Cheap up on your kids "Unvaluable"

  29. d says:

party city is a great place to shop for that stuff but all stores sell costumes these days but i would recomend party city.

  30. Matt says:

You should go to walmart and get the scream cosutme set for 20.00 dollars. it comes with a bloddy mask a cape and gloves. it’s a cool set.

  31. Pundit Bandit says:

Have them go as the Three Blind Mice. A little face make up and homemade mouse ears, sunglasses, and white tapping sticks made from doweling. You can probably get everything you will need for under $20 bucks.

  32. liza says:

my kids were about the same age when i did them up as hershey bars…i got cardboard from cartons and did tin foil on each end after spraying the cardboard with brown spray paint, lettering was tin foil as well glued into place…you can figure this out.

what i missed,in prep,is that the sandwich board set-up should have been ABOVE thier knees.

they all did look really cute @ almost no cost.

    happy halloween to your family!
